Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, IKE
IKE är en av Linköpings universitets största institutioner med verksamhet inom framförallt den medicinska fakulteten.
Inom grundutbildningen ansvarar IKE bland annat för logopedutbildning, utbildning inom medicinsk biologi samt huvuddelen av läkarutbildningen. Institutionen utexaminerar årligen ca 40 medicine doktorer.
IKEs forskningsverksamhet har expanderat kraftigt de senaste åren och befinner sig fortfarande i ett mycket expansivt skede. Forskning bedrivs inom ett brett spektrum av modern biomedicin, från detaljerade molekylära och cellulära studier, till genetik, klinisk forskning och epidemiologi.
IKE är för närvarande värd för tre strategiska forskningsområden, områden som erhåller ett särskilt stöd från Linköpings universitet och Landstinget i Östergötland för att utveckla sin verksamhet. Dessa tre är: Regenerativ Medicin, Systemneurobiologi samt Diarrésjukdomar.
Institutionen är organiserad i sex avdelningar och ett kansli samt bedriver verksamhet inom 49 ämnesområden.

Intestinal bacteria - for better or for worse (2011-12-19)
Every year around 400 Swedes fall ill with Crohn’s disease; an incurable inflammation of the intestines that can lead to diarrhoea, severe pain, and stomach sores. Johan Dabrosin Söderholm, professor of Surgery, has been researching the illness since the 1990s.
Antibiotic crisis a global threat (2011-11-25)
One antibiotic preparation after another ceases to work. In Vietnam, half or more of the bacteria cannot be eradicated because they are resistant to antibiotics. Håkan Hanberger, professor of Infectious Diseases at LiU, is working regionally and globally to meet the crisis.
New findings in the war on the tubercle bacterium (2011-11-22)
Tuberculosis kills two million people each year and is once again gaining ground also in Sweden and other Western countries. Researchers at Linköping University in Sweden are now presenting new findings that show how the tubercle bacterium manages to survive inside the body’s macrophage cells in order to eventually to blow them up and spread their infection.
Abused children become youths who take risks (2011-11-22)
Children subjected to abuse lead more dangerous lives as teenagers. They try alcohol and drugs more often than other young people, as well as attempting to steal and resorting to violence against others. They also have more self-destructive behaviour, as shown in a dissertation in paediatric psychiatry.
A common medicine used to combat osteoporosis can cause fractures (2011-11-22)
Bisphosphonates are a medication that has been administered since the 1990s, which reduces the overall risk of bone fragility. Bisphosphonates deactivate those cells that break down bone and therefore prevent fractures caused by fragility of the bone.
